The Department of Pharmaceutics has a rich tradition of innovation and a commitment to advancing health through new knowledge. Pharmaceutics is the study of relationships between drug formulation, delivery, disposition and clinical response. It encompasses a molecular evaluation of drug metabolism and transport processes and the study of genetic, environmental and disease-related factors that regulate or perturb those processes, as well as the fundamental mathematical relationships between enzyme/transporter function, blood concentration-time profiles and the spectrum of pharmacological effects.

A pharmaceutical scientist:

  • characterizes physical properties of drugs
  • develops innovative delivery systems for drugs
  • Quantitatively evaluates drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and pharmacological activity in the living organism.

Pharmaceutical biotechnology is a relatively new and growing field in which the principles of biotechnology are applied to the development of drugs. A majority of therapeutics drugs in the current market are bioformulations, such as antibodies, nucleic acid products and vaccines. Such bioformulations are developed through several stages that include: understanding the principles underlying health and disease, the fundamental molecular mechanisms governing the function of related biomolecules, synthesis and purification of the molecules; determining the product shelf life, stability and toxicity and immunogenicity; drug delivery systems; patenting and clinical trials.
